Media arts project Thousand Kites is excited to offer community radio stations and individuals the 8th annual national radio program Calls From Home. Calls From Home, produced in the coalfields of central Appalachia, reaches a national network of prisoners, their loved ones and public listeners through community radio.

Working with prisoner families and advocates, Holler to the Hood, via WMMT-FM and participating community radio stations, sends family messages through the walls of prisons such as Appalachia's Wallens Ridge and into more well-known prisons including Sing Sing, Angola, Folsom and beyond. WMMT-FM in Whitesburg, KY will record calls from family members on December 11th from 3-11PM (Eastern). The toll-free number for participants is 888.396.1208. Calls From Home is an effort to educate the public about the criminal justice system. Community radio stations, prisoner family groups, and artists are working together to bring the voices of prisoners’ family members to the airwaves on stations across the country. We believe in the power of people telling their stories to change the hearts and minds of the public. Call in on December 12th, from 6-11pm (eastern) to record your message. The toll-free number is 888.396.1208. Suggest stations for us to contact in the form below.

In addition to broadcasting on over one hundred radio stations here are some other ways Calls from Home is being used:

-In Maine a prison reform advocate played the program for prisoners at the Hancock Jail and facilitated a discussion afterward.
-In Virginia a prison reform group played segments of the program for state legislators as part of an effort to educate them about the criminal justice system.
-In Washington State a prison activist group played Calls From Home as part of a fundraising house party.
-In Kentucky, Califorinia and New York educators are using Calls From Home as part of their curricula for classes ranging from criminal justice issues to media democracy.
-At the Louisinia State Prison in Angola, prisoners aired Calls From Home several times on their prisoner-run station, WLSP.
